Radio Operator
Organizational Context
The United Nations Security Office in Dapaong requires a Radio Operator to ensure continuity in its responsibilities within the Savanes region. This position, funded by Security Management Team (SMT) agencies, is administered by UNDP under the operational supervision of UNDSS. Contract extension is contingent upon performance and funding availability.
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the UN Security Advisor and Field Security Associate, the Radio Operator provides essential operational support for communications and vehicle tracking during missions in the Savanes region. This role is critical for ensuring the technical functionality and reliable operation of the United Nations communication systems. The incumbent will manage daily radio checks, maintain communication logs, and ensure the security and integrity of the radio network, contributing to the overall safety and operational efficiency of UN personnel in the area.
Responsibilities
The Radio Operator is responsible for managing all technical aspects of the radio room, including ensuring clear communications via HF, telephone, smartphone, and email with various UN stations. This involves tracking field personnel movements, conducting daily HF and VHF radio checks with field offices, and reporting to the Security Advisor. The role includes monitoring the VHF and HF network for unauthorized users and maintaining daily radio room presence for security messages. Additionally, the operator will guide users of the common telecommunication network, maintain communication equipment, and report any network irregularities or equipment failures. Responsibilities also extend to maintaining records of radio activities, managing inventory of telecommunication equipment, updating contact directories, and assisting with training and knowledge sharing.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of experience in telecommunications and security is required, particularly with a secondary school diploma. Three years of experience in telecommunications, specifically with the use of telecom equipment, is desirable. Familiarity with standard telecommunication equipment operation and proficiency in Microsoft applications are also required.
Skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French.
