This role sits within the Peace and Security Section, contributing to global efforts on women, peace, and security (WPS) and gender-responsive protection.
Job Purpose
This role supports UN Women's work on gender-responsive protection, including policy development, coordination, capacity-building, and technical assistance to regional and country offices. The Policy Specialist will contribute to the implementation and monitoring of global commitments on women, peace, and security, ensuring gender-responsive, survivor-centred, and intersectional approaches are integrated across protection and justice initiatives.
Responsibilities
Provide technical assistance and programme support to HQ, regional, and country offices on protection and WPS-related policies and programming. Contribute to policy development, implementation, and quality assurance on gender-responsive protection initiatives, including conflict-related sexual violence and women human rights defenders. Represent UN Women in inter-agency and international protection mechanisms, providing inputs to relevant reports. Coordinate the Section's work on women human rights defenders and reprisals, supporting UN Country Teams and developing guidance to prevent and mitigate reprisals against women civil society representatives engaging with the UN.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender equality, gender-responsive protection, or the WPS agenda is required. Experience in developing and implementing related programmes or activities at country, regional, or global levels is also required. Experience in coordination mechanisms or policy development related to women human rights defenders is desirable.
Skills
Knowledge of the WPS agenda and gender-responsive, survivor-centered, and inclusive approaches to protection; Knowledge of UN Women and the UN system; Programme development and implementation; Policy research with a gender analysis; Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under time constraints; Drafting policy papers and briefings.
