Job Purpose
This role serves to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of UN Women Indonesia's programmes and events by providing professional sign language interpretation services. The purpose is to facilitate effective two-way communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing participants and hearing participants, ensuring their full and meaningful engagement. By bridging communication barriers, the interpreter contributes to UN Women's mission of promoting gender equality, women's empowerment, and the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring all stakeholders can participate equally.
Responsibilities
Provide simultaneous and consecutive sign language interpretation for UN Women programme activities, including meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences, consultations, public campaigns, and virtual events. Facilitate clear and accurate two-way communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing and hearing participants, ensuring the conveyance of meaning, tone, intent, and context without distortion. For virtual events, conduct technical checks to ensure suitable audiovisual quality and connectivity. Coordinate with event organizers on accessibility settings and maintain confidentiality of discussions and documents. The consultant will deliver professional interpretation services on an as-needed basis throughout the contract duration.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 6 years of professional sign language interpretation experience with secondary education, or 3 years with a bachelor's degree. Demonstrated experience in interpreting for events, working with Deaf communities, supporting accessibility services, and providing interpretation for virtual/hybrid events is essential. Experience supporting gender equality, human rights, or disability inclusion programmes is desirable.
Skills
Advanced proficiency in Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO and/or SIBI), accurate interpretation between spoken Indonesian/English and sign language, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, strong comprehension and expression, understanding of Deaf culture, knowledge of disability inclusion and accessible communication principles, ability to facilitate meaningful participation, commitment to non-discrimination, and ensuring visual/communication accessibility in virtual settings.
