Organizational Context

UN Women's Regional Office for East and Southern Africa (ESARO) in Kenya coordinates 12 country offices and supports UN Country Teams. The region faces complex challenges including climate change, conflict, and economic shocks, which disproportionately affect women. The Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) Programme aims to enhance women's economic autonomy through livelihood opportunities, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Job Purpose

This internship supports UN Women's Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) portfolio within the ESARO regional office. The intern will contribute to research, programme management, and communications related to gender equality and women's economic autonomy in East and Southern Africa. The role aims to provide the intern with enhanced knowledge of gender equality, women's economic empowerment, development economics in Africa, and the programmatic and operational aspects of UN Women's work, fostering a deeper understanding of gender-responsive economic policies and initiatives.

Responsibilities

The intern will support the Policy Specialist in various key areas. This includes assisting with research on economic empowerment from a gender economics perspective, and contributing to programme management and implementation. Additionally, the intern will support communications efforts by drafting position papers, talking points, website articles, and social media content. Administrative tasks as required will also be part of the role. Learning objectives focus on gaining knowledge in gender equality, women's economic empowerment, gender and economics in African development, and UN Women's operational functions.

Work Experience

No specific work experience is required for this internship. The focus is on academic enrollment and the potential to learn and contribute to the WEE portfolio.

Skills

Demonstrable knowledge of feminist/gender economics. Demonstrable knowledge of development issues in Africa, preferably East and Southern Africa. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English. Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
