Job Purpose
The Regional Portfolio Specialist manages a portfolio of grants for the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Girls (EVAW/G) in the Africa region. This role contributes to the Fund's global grant-making, accompaniment, monitoring, capacity development, and partnership functions. The Specialist provides crucial strategic and technical support to grantee partners throughout the grant lifecycle, ensuring high-quality, feminist-informed EVAW/G programming, effective risk management, and institutional strengthening. The position also involves providing strategic portfolio analysis and recommendations to senior management, and fostering collaboration with UN Women offices, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance learning and advocacy on EVAW/G.
Responsibilities
The Regional Portfolio Specialist is responsible for managing and monitoring a portfolio of UN Trust Fund grants in the Africa region, overseeing the full grant cycle from technical review of proposals to closure. This includes providing substantive programmatic advice to grantees on feminist-informed and survivor-centered EVAW/G approaches, promoting adaptive management, and supporting institutional strengthening. The role involves assessing grantee performance, identifying and mitigating operational and programmatic risks, and ensuring compliance with UN Trust Fund policies and safeguarding standards. Additionally, the Specialist contributes to grant selection processes, portfolio quality assurance, knowledge generation through analysis of trends and lessons learned, and strengthening regional coordination and partnerships with UN Women offices and stakeholders. The role also includes managing a Programme and Finance Associate.
Work Experience
Requires at least 5 years of progressive experience in programme management, including design, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and capacity building in ending violence against women. Experience working directly with civil society and women's organizations in Africa on EVAW/G is essential. Experience in setting priorities, budgets, work plans, and results-based management is also required. Experience managing complex multi-country portfolios, providing technical assistance, and grant-making processes is desirable. Fluency in English is required; French and other UN languages are desirable.
