UN Women is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Division of Finance and Administration (DFA) manages resources and operations. This Security and Safety Specialist role, based in Nairobi, Kenya, will provide crucial backstopping coverage for Africa, advising and supporting UN Women offices and personnel on security and safety matters to minimize risks and enable programme delivery.
Job Purpose
The Security and Safety Specialist will provide essential technical support, guidance, and advice to UN Women's Headquarters, Regional, Multi-Country, and Country Offices, with a primary focus on Africa. This role is critical for ensuring the safety and security of UN Women personnel, property, and operations by aligning with UN and UN Women security policies and procedures. The specialist will advise on security measures, track threats, conduct assessments, and implement risk mitigation strategies, thereby enabling the effective delivery of UN Women's programmes across the region while minimizing operational risks.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include providing timely security and safety advice and recommendations to offices, approving organizational missions, and interpreting UN/UN Women security policies. The specialist will oversee security evaluations, advise on residential security measures, and track evolving threats and their impact on personnel and operations. This role involves conducting security assessments of premises and equipment, liaising with government security organizations and other UN entities, and participating in security management meetings. Additionally, the incumbent will collect, update, and disseminate security information, develop and implement the UN Women Security Plan, and monitor compliance with Security Risk Management Measures (SRMM). Reporting security incidents, developing country briefings, and conducting security awareness training are also core duties. The role includes overseeing security budgets and finances, and performing other related security tasks.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in security is required, with at least 2 years at the international level (country, regional, or global context). Experience in conducting security/safety risk assessments as part of operational planning is essential. Experience in disaster/conflict operations, business continuity, regional/global security roles, and the UN Security Management System is desirable.
