UN Women is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women globally. Its Africa Strategy focuses on advancing women's social, economic, and political rights, and eliminating violence against women and girls. The 'Making Every Woman and Girl Count' programme aims to strengthen gender statistics in Africa. This consultancy supports the creation of a continental Africa Gender Snapshot report to address aggregated reporting and highlight regional disparities.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to produce a comprehensive continental report on progress towards gender equality in Africa under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report will assess progress on gender-related SDG indicators, identify data gaps and availability across African countries and sub-regions, and strengthen country validation and ownership of gender data. The consultant will develop a report titled 'Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa: A Gender Snapshot', providing disaggregated analysis to improve visibility of regional and country-level disparities and inform policy.
Responsibilities
The consultant will compile and harmonize gender-related SDG indicator data from various sources, developing country data profiles. They will facilitate validation with National Statistical Offices and engage with regional partners for data consistency. A comprehensive assessment of data availability, quality, and key gaps, including disaggregation and comparability, will be conducted across Africa, analyzing disparities across sub-regions. The consultant will perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of progress towards gender equality under Agenda 2030, identifying trends, inequalities, and priority thematic areas. Finally, they will produce a high-quality analytical report, integrating feedback from UN Women and partners, ensuring alignment with SDG frameworks and Women Count standards, and support the development of data visualizations for publication.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of experience in gender equality and women's empowerment research is required. Experience in analyzing data, working with regional datasets and reports for international agencies, and familiarity with Agenda 2030 and SDG indicators are also necessary.
Skills
Demonstrable technical expertise in gender-related research in Africa; Demonstrable statistical analysis experience in the Africa region; Excellent writing skills.
