This International Consultant - Communications Specialist reports to the Regional Women’s Economic Empowerment Lead, focusing on strengthening the visibility and impact of WEE initiatives across the region.
Job Purpose
The International Consultant - Communications Specialist is crucial for enhancing the visibility, influence, and impact of UN Women's Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) initiatives across Asia and the Pacific. The WEE Unit leads regional efforts to advance women’s participation and leadership in the economy through flagship programmes like Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), Gender Action Lab, and sustainable finance initiatives. This role involves leading the development and implementation of strategic communications, advocacy, digital engagement, and stakeholder outreach for the expanding WEE portfolio. The specialist will serve as the focal point for WEE communications, collaborating closely with regional and headquarters teams, Country Offices, and external partners. The ultimate goal is to ensure that UN Women's commitments on gender equality and women's economic empowerment translate into tangible action and achieve widespread recognition and support, engaging diverse stakeholders including governments, private sector, and civil society.
Responsibilities
The consultant will develop and implement comprehensive communications and advocacy strategies for the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) portfolio, aligning with regional and corporate priorities. This includes conducting needs assessments, integrating communications into programme proposals, and supporting regional campaigns and events. A key responsibility is to produce and disseminate diverse communications products, such as press releases, articles, multimedia content, and impact narratives, ensuring quality and brand consistency. The role involves managing media relations, building contacts, organizing briefings, and overseeing WEE-related web and social media content, including developing digital campaigns and utilizing AI-enabled tools for efficiency and outreach. The specialist will also foster partnerships and ensure donor visibility requirements are met in all communications. Furthermore, the consultant will lead knowledge management by documenting lessons learned, facilitating knowledge sharing, and providing capacity building to staff on communications and advocacy, including the responsible use of AI tools. Finally, the role entails monitoring communications performance using analytics, preparing periodic reports, and recommending improvements based on data and audience insights.
Work Experience
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, advocacy, public information, digital communications, media relations, or stakeholder engagement is required. This includes demonstrated experience advising senior leadership and implementing initiatives at regional, multi-country, or international levels. Desirable experience includes working with international organizations, development institutions, governments, the UN system, or private sector partners. Familiarity with AI-enabled communications tools and their responsible application, along with knowledge of gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, or women’s rights, is also desirable.
Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication, advocacy, and editorial skills in English. Ability to communicate sensitively and creatively across constituencies. Strong knowledge of web-based knowledge management systems, social media platforms, and digital outreach. Solid understanding of production, graphic design, and photography standards. Ability to produce compelling advocacy materials. Good networking skills with diverse stakeholders. Strategic and analytical communications planning. Familiarity with media landscapes and awareness of AI-enabled communications tools for responsible application. Knowledge of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment is desirable.
