Organizational Context
UN Women is the UN entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. It works to eliminate discrimination and achieve equality between men and women. In Peru, UN Women supports initiatives to generate evidence and strengthen capacities regarding the socio-economic situation of women, particularly in territories with extractive industries. This consultancy is linked to the Zafranal Mining Project in Arequipa.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to conduct a qualitative study to deepen the understanding of factors conditioning women's empowerment in the area of influence of the Zafranal Mining Project. This study will complement previous quantitative findings, providing insights into structural, cultural, and institutional causes of gender gaps. It aims to identify opportunities and restrictions for women's economic participation, analyze their perceptions of mining impacts, and gather perspectives from institutional actors. The ultimate goal is to generate recommendations for designing gender-responsive community engagement strategies and territorial public policies.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for developing a qualitative analysis document that delves into the factors conditioning women's empowerment in the area of influence of the Zafranal Mining Project, aligning with previous quantitative findings. Key activities include reviewing the quantitative indicator synthesis, relevant secondary literature, and designing a detailed work plan. The consultant will develop semi-structured interview and focus group guides, map key actors, and conduct fieldwork. This involves collecting data from women of various profiles (rural, urban-rural, indigenous, young, heads of household) and institutional actors. The consultant will analyze perceptions of mining impacts on women's lives, economic autonomy, and community participation, identifying restrictions and opportunities. Finally, the consultant will formulate concrete recommendations for intervention design, community engagement strategies, and local public policies with a gender and intercultural approach.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in research, qualitative methodologies, gender analysis, and socio-economic studies is required. Experience working with mining-affected communities and in Latin America is highly desirable. Proven experience in report writing and analysis is essential.
