Job Purpose
This National Consultant Sign Language Interpreter role is crucial for ensuring accessibility at UN Women Liberia's official events, meetings, consultations, trainings, and public engagements. The purpose is to provide accurate and professional interpretation between spoken English and Liberian Sign Language, facilitating the full participation of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. By bridging communication gaps, the consultant directly supports UN Women's commitment to gender equality, social inclusion, and the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in the organization's work.
Responsibilities
The National Consultant Sign Language Interpreter will provide accurate, professional, and impartial interpretation during UN Women-supported events, including meetings, workshops, trainings, and public forums. This involves interpreting spoken English into Liberian Sign Language and vice versa. The consultant must review event materials in advance to ensure effective interpretation, maintain confidentiality and professional ethics, and coordinate with UN Women teams for timely service delivery. Responsibilities also include ensuring appropriate positioning and accessibility for in-person, virtual, and hybrid events, and supporting the mainstreaming of disability inclusion and accessibility standards. A summary of interpretation services delivered will be consolidated at the end of the contract period.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in professional sign language interpretation at high-level settings is required. Demonstrated experience in international development, human rights, or UN contexts is essential. Experience interpreting in gender equality, women's rights, or disability rights forums is highly desirable. Proven experience in remote/virtual interpretation is also required, alongside excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team.
