This role supports the integration of gender into humanitarian programming and coordination mechanisms.
Job Purpose
The Gender in Humanitarian Action Specialist will provide essential gender-focused technical assistance and lead coordination efforts within humanitarian programming. Working closely with various clusters and sub-clusters, the specialist will ensure that gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are central to humanitarian response planning and implementation. This role contributes to UN Women's mandate of placing women's rights at the center of all efforts, ensuring that humanitarian interventions are inclusive, responsive to gendered needs, and promote the meaningful participation and leadership of women's organizations.
Responsibilities
The Gender in Humanitarian Action Specialist will lead the Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) Working Group, representing UN Women in key coordination forums such as the Inter-Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) and PSEA/AAP forums. Responsibilities include providing technical support on gender mainstreaming to humanitarian clusters, contributing to the development of GiHA strategies and proposals, and managing humanitarian projects. The specialist will offer policy guidance and technical support to humanitarian actors, advocate for critical gender issues, and support the implementation of the GiHA accountability framework. Additionally, the role involves developing data-driven knowledge products, facilitating gender integration into assessments, and building the capacity of local humanitarian actors and women-led organizations on GiHA.
Work Experience
Requires at least 5 years of progressive experience in designing, planning, implementing, and monitoring development projects. Essential experience includes technical expertise in Women, Peace, and Security in conflict/post-conflict settings and the WPS-humanitarian nexus. Experience in UN system coordination, liaising with government/donors, and team leadership is desirable.
