Organizational Context

The Field Language Assistant role is within the Translation Unit of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), located in the Abyei Administrative Area. The incumbent will report directly to the Field Translator or their designate, supporting mission operations and local engagement.

Job Purpose

The Field Language Assistant is responsible for facilitating clear and concise verbal communication and interpretation between UN mission representatives and the local population to support operations and broader mission activities. This role also involves translating documents and communications from and to English across various subjects relevant to the UN's work. The assistant will liaise with other sections for logistical and administrative arrangements, stay informed about relevant media news, and assist supervisors with drafting correspondence, briefing notes, and background information. The position requires performing other duties as assigned to ensure effective mission functioning and communication.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include providing clear verbal communication and interpretation, bridging the gap between mission representatives and the local population to support operations. The role involves translating documents and communications into and from English on diverse UN-related topics. Additionally, the Field Language Assistant will liaise with other sections for scheduling and administrative coordination, monitor media for relevant news, and brief supervisors and colleagues. The position also entails assisting supervisors with drafting routine correspondence and supporting officers in preparing drafts, briefing notes, and background materials. Performing other assigned duties is also a core function.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of experience in providing interpretation and translation services is required.
