IMEO Science Lead - Agriculture
Organizational Context
The International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), part of the UN Environment Programme, is a data-driven initiative focused on reducing methane emissions. IMEO aims to provide reliable methane data to meet Paris Agreement goals by integrating information from satellites, scientific studies, industry reporting, and national inventories. This role supports IMEO's mission as a core partner of the Global Methane Pledge.
Job Purpose
This role provides strategic scientific leadership for the International Methane Emissions Observatory's (IMEO) agricultural methane portfolio. The purpose is to strengthen the global evidence base on agricultural methane emissions, which constitute the largest share of anthropogenic methane. The Science Lead will develop and implement IMEO's agricultural science strategy, coordinate measurement science, develop reference datasets, and integrate multiple evidence sources. This position is crucial for establishing a globally trusted scientific infrastructure for agricultural methane, supporting countries in improving emission quantification, and positioning IMEO as a leader in this field to drive significant reductions in warming.
Responsibilities
Develop and update IMEO’s agricultural methane science strategy. Identify scientific knowledge gaps and research opportunities. Provide scientific leadership for IMEO’s agricultural methane portfolio. Represent IMEO in international scientific initiatives and expert groups. Lead the scientific design and oversee the implementation of IMEO Science Studies for the agriculture sector. Review project deliverables, datasets, technical reports, and publications. Coordinate cross-country synthesis of findings. Evaluate submitted science proposals. Contribute to reporting and donor engagement. Support partnerships and capacity development with governments and international organizations.
Work Experience
Requires professional experience in methane science, environmental science, Earth system science, atmospheric science, or a related field. Experience in developing, managing, and implementing international scientific projects in developing countries (Africa, Latin America, Asia) with government, research, and international partners is necessary.
