UNCTAD Internship in the Division on International Trade and Commodities
Organizational Context
This internship is within the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), specifically in the Trade in Services Section, Trading Systems, Services and Creative Economy Branch, Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC). The role is based in Geneva and offers a six-month, full-time, in-person experience. Interns are responsible for all personal expenses, including travel, accommodation, and insurance.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this internship is to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in international trade and development within UNCTAD. Interns will support the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC) by contributing to research, analysis, reporting, digital communications, and event organization. This role aims to enhance the intern's educational background by exposing them to the work of the United Nations, fostering a deeper understanding of global trade dynamics, policy-making, and the UN's role in sustainable development. The internship is designed to offer hands-on experience in a professional international environment, contributing to the UNCTAD's mandate.
Responsibilities
Interns will conduct research and analysis on international trade trends, policies, the multilateral trading system, and South-South trade cooperation. They will assist in drafting, editing, and formatting reports, official communications, and presentations for senior management and stakeholders. Responsibilities also include creating engaging content for web stories and social media to support advocacy efforts. Additionally, interns will provide support in organizing meetings, webinars, and workshops, including preparing background documents. They will also assist in maintaining internal databases and managing data files, along with performing ad-hoc administrative tasks as assigned by their supervisor.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a university degree in a field closely related to international trade and development, such as economics, international trade, statistics, or international relations. The focus is on academic background and demonstrated interest in the UN's work.
Skills
Research and analysis, data gathering, report drafting and editing, content creation for digital platforms, event and logistics support, knowledge management, computer literacy in standard software applications, ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds, keen interest in the UN's work, and fluency in English. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
