Humanitarian Affairs Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), based in Geneva, Switzerland, works to reduce the threat of explosive ordnance. UNMAS coordinates UN mine action, leads country-level programs, and develops international standards. This internship is within the UNMAS Geneva office, reporting to the UNMAS Representative in Geneva.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a six-month, full-time, in-person opportunity at the UNMAS Geneva office. The intern will support UNMAS's mission by assisting in the organization of a global mine action conference, conducting research, and drafting documents on advocacy priorities, humanitarian disarmament, and the impact of explosive ordnance. The role involves engaging with the humanitarian community, monitoring human rights deliberations, attending relevant meetings, and contributing to communications efforts, all under the supervision of the UNMAS Representative.
Responsibilities
Assist in organizing the 30th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers (NDM-UN30). Conduct research and draft documents on UNMAS advocacy priorities, including International Humanitarian Law and risk management. Prepare documentation on humanitarian disarmament related to key international conventions. Support engagement with the humanitarian community and UNMAS's role in the Global Protection Cluster. Analyze and present information on the humanitarian impact of explosive ordnance and mitigation efforts. Draft various documents such as analyses, letters, background notes, and summary records. Monitor Human Rights Council deliberations on anti-personnel mines. Attend meetings and provide briefing notes. Contribute to daily team tasks and administrative duties. Prepare social media content aligned with the office communications strategy.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree. A demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also important.
Skills
Research and drafting, document preparation, data analysis, communication (verbal and written), social media content creation, computer literacy (MS Office Suite, MS Teams), intercultural communication, interest in humanitarian affairs and UN principles.
