Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Industry and Economy Division promotes sustainable consumption and production patterns and sound chemical management. The GEF Chemicals and Green Chemistry Unit manages GEF-funded projects in the Chemicals and Wastes focal area, overseeing a portfolio and developing new projects.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to support the GEF Chemicals and Green Chemistry Unit by developing GEF-9 projects and concepts, supervising and task-managing projects within the Chemicals and Waste portfolio, and providing technical and operational support to the planetGOLD programme and Minamata Convention Enabling Activities. The role requires specialist knowledge in GEF project development, mercury programming, and coordination with various stakeholders to ensure timely project implementation and oversight.

Responsibilities

The consultant will support project development and technical delivery across the GEF Chemicals and Waste portfolio, focusing on GEF-9 concepts and projects related to mercury in products, non-ferrous metals, artisanal gold mining, and enabling activities. Key duties include task management, reviewing progress and financial reports, facilitating project steering committee meetings, supporting project closure, and developing PIF/PPG packages for planetGOLD and Minamata Convention projects. The role also involves conducting terminal evaluations and ensuring integration across different GEF focal areas.

Work Experience

A minimum of 2 years of project management experience, including international exposure, is required. Demonstrated working knowledge of GEF project development and supervision is essential. Experience in implementing mercury-related projects is also a requirement for this role.
