Organizational Context

The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), a regional arm of the UN Secretariat, aims to enhance its capacity for rigorous macroeconomic analysis and policy advice. This role supports African countries in achieving sustainable economic transformation, implementing development agendas, and strengthening Africa's global policy influence. The position is within the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme) and Chief Economist.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to bolster the ECA's capacity in delivering high-quality, evidence-based macroeconomic analysis and policy advice to support African nations. The role will contribute to fostering inclusive and sustainable economic transformation, accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and continental development frameworks, and enhancing Africa's thought leadership and policy influence on the global stage. By providing critical analysis on economic trends, fiscal and monetary policy impacts, and simulations, the consultant will help shape evidence-based policies and effective decision-making for African governments, enabling them to build resilience and capitalize on their strengths in an evolving global landscape.

Responsibilities

The consultant will monitor and analyze global economic developments and their implications for African economies, providing timely insights and conducting rapid economic assessments. Responsibilities include providing input on data collection for economic analysis, supporting the preparation and review of knowledge products, and integrating climate-related macroeconomic risks and green financing strategies. The role involves offering technical advisory services on policies and strategies related to ECA subprogrammes and thematic areas, and supporting the development of policy briefs and presentations for high-level engagements. Additionally, the consultant will provide technical input to ECA’s participation in global and regional economic governance platforms, including intergovernmental processes, G20, African Union committees, and IMF/World Bank meetings, focusing on Africa’s macroeconomic priorities and reform needs.

Work Experience

A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in macroeconomic analysis, forecasting, policy-oriented economic research, data science, and visualization is required. Substantial experience with multilateral financial development institutions and relevant work experience in Africa are also necessary. Familiarity with the workflows of similar international organizations is desirable.
