Organizational Context

This position is based in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Jalalabad Field Office. The Associate Political Affairs Officer reports to the Political Affairs Team Leader and Head of Field Office, contributing to the mission's mandate in the Eastern region of Afghanistan.

Job Purpose

The Associate Political Affairs Officer in the UNAMA Jalalabad Field Office is responsible for monitoring political, socio-economic, and security developments in the Eastern region of Afghanistan. This role involves establishing and maintaining networks with key interlocutors, analyzing information from various sources, and producing analytical political reports. The officer will conduct field outreach missions, assist senior officials with briefing materials, and develop engagement strategies, particularly focusing on empowering women and girls. The position supports the Head of Field Office and Political Affairs Team Leader in implementing UNAMA's mandate and contributing to political, humanitarian, and economic activities.

Responsibilities

Monitor political, socio-economic, and security developments in Afghanistan's Eastern region (Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, Nuristan). Establish and maintain a network of key interlocutors relevant to UNAMA's mandate. Analyze information from diverse sources, including media, to stay informed on political issues. Compile and update provincial profiles for the Eastern region. Conduct field outreach missions to engage with de facto authorities and communities on UNAMA priorities. Produce thematic and analytical political reports for the Jalalabad Field Office and HQ Political Affairs Service. Assist senior officials by drafting briefing notes, background papers, and talking points. Develop outreach strategies focused on women's participation. Prepare summaries and correspondence. Support the Head of Field Office and Political Affairs Team Leader, including representation in meetings. Provide input on political, humanitarian, and economic activities in collaboration with UN Agencies. Conduct social research on community relations with de facto authorities.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, or conflict resolution is required. Experience in political economy analysis and reporting, political/security database management, and familiarity with platforms like SAGE or Power BI are also required.
