Consultant on Water Security in the Arab Region
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), part of the UN Secretariat, seeks a consultant to address critical water security challenges in the Arab region. This role operates remotely and contributes to sustainable development by analyzing regional water scarcity issues and proposing solutions.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to prepare a comprehensive analytical paper on water security across the Arab region. This paper will elaborate on the current challenges, exacerbated by factors like shared water resources, pollution, climate change, and inefficient use. It aims to provide insights and identify potential pathways for advancing the water agenda, considering national and regional approaches. The role supports the attainment of sustainable development and prosperity by offering recommendations for investment and cooperation to enhance resilient water security.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide a framing for water security in the Arab region, aligning with national priorities and regional strategies. This includes reviewing the current landscape of water security in Arab countries, highlighting successful cooperation examples. The role involves examining key drivers of vulnerability and resilience, such as climate change, economic development, and conflict. Furthermore, the consultant will assess national and regional enablers for advancing water security, including innovation, finance, knowledge exchange, and private sector engagement, identifying opportunities for regional cooperation. Finally, the consultant will offer insights and recommendations on priority areas for investment and cooperation to foster resilient water security across the region.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in water resources management is required, with demonstrated experience in regional development issues within the Arab region. Experience writing reports and papers for international organizations on water resources is also required. Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis and interpretation is desirable.
