Organizational Context

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), part of the UN Secretariat, seeks a consultant to analyze food systems in the Arab region. This role operates remotely and contributes to understanding regional food security, livelihoods, and natural resource sustainability.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this consultancy is to prepare a comprehensive analytical paper on food systems across Arab States. This paper will elaborate on current conditions, identify vulnerabilities and opportunities for transformation, and offer insights into potential future developments. The consultant will compile and analyze relevant data, highlight regional examples of cooperation, and provide recommendations for strengthening food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and overall food system resilience and sustainability within the region, aligning with global and regional food systems transformation agendas.

Responsibilities

The consultant will provide a framework for food systems transformation in the Arab region, incorporating national, regional, and global perspectives. Key duties include reviewing the current landscape of Arab food systems, identifying successful inter-country cooperation examples, and examining critical drivers of vulnerability and resilience, such as climate change, water scarcity, resource constraints, conflict, and market shocks. The role also involves assessing the impact of cross-national linkages on food system outcomes, including flows of goods, finance, technology, and knowledge, to identify opportunities for regional collaboration. Finally, the consultant will offer actionable insights and recommendations for investment and cooperation to enhance food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and the sustainability of food systems.

Work Experience

A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in food systems is required, with a demonstrated focus on regional development issues within the Arab region. Experience writing reports and papers for international organizations, particularly on energy-related topics, is also required. Experience in conducting and interpreting quantitative analysis is desirable.

Skills

Analytical skills, report writing, quantitative analysis, understanding of food systems, knowledge of regional development issues in the Arab region, communication (English fluency required, Arabic desirable).
