Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development. The Office of Science, Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section develops and strengthens a foresight platform to analyze signals of change, integrated into UNEP’s digital architecture to institutionalize foresight practices across regions and country offices.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to enhance UNEP's digital capabilities by developing and optimizing various platforms and applications. The role will focus on improving system efficiency, migrating applications to modern frameworks like Drupal, and developing new solutions such as a Household Waste Categorization web application using AI. The objective is to strengthen UNEP's capacity for data analysis, foresight, and environmental monitoring, supporting informed policy-making and adaptive decision-making in a complex global environment. The consultant will contribute to richer digital solutions for data and knowledge flows, linking environmental changes to policy analyses and actions.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include enhancing the UNEP GEF Project Implementation Report (PIR) platform for the FY2026 cycle, migrating the CITES MIKE application from PHP to Drupal, and supporting its deployment. The role involves developing a user management module for the foresight application portal, moving configuration files to a database, and creating pipelines to integrate new signals from Microsoft Forms. Additionally, the consultant will design and develop a Household Waste Categorization web application for Lesotho using AI, and ensure data entry efficiency by updating entries from previous reporting periods.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of professional experience in computer science, IT, or related fields is required. This includes experience with Drupal CMS development, API integration, application development using MS SQL and relational databases, web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, React, Python), system analysis, design, and programming (PHP, MVC frameworks, Docker Hub). Experience with UN or similar international organizations is desirable.
