Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Governance Affairs Office, specifically the Civil Society Unit, facilitates engagement with Major Groups and Stakeholders on UNEP's environmental agenda and sustainable development. This internship is based in Nairobi within the Civil Society Unit, supporting UNEP's liaison role.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to support the Civil Society Unit of the Governance Affairs Office within UNEP in Nairobi. The intern will assist in facilitating the engagement of Major Groups and Stakeholders, with a particular focus on the Children and Youth Major Group and Indigenous Peoples. The role involves supporting key events, implementing resolutions on youth participation, coordinating meetings, providing logistical and technical assistance, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of UNEP's outreach and engagement with civil society in preparation for major environmental assemblies and ongoing activities.

Responsibilities

Assist in planning and organizing key events for Major Groups and Stakeholders, including consultative meetings and forums, in preparation for UNEA-8. Support the coordination and implementation of UNEA resolution 7/6 to enhance youth participation in environmental processes. Provide logistical and technical assistance for coordination and planning meetings for Major Groups and Stakeholders and their Facilitating Committee. Offer support to colleagues with meeting setups, receiving NGOs, and providing meeting assistance. Participate in meetings, assist with agenda development, minute-taking, and summarizing discussions. Facilitate the engagement of Major Groups and Stakeholders in relevant UN meetings. Organize follow-up activities, workshops, webinars, and conferences related to stakeholder engagement. Undertake other assigned tasks as required.

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams) is required. Experience in drafting news articles or social media posts, and designing surveys/polls, is desirable.
