Consultancy on Energy Systems in the Arab Region
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), part of the UN Secretariat, seeks a consultant to analyze energy systems in the Arab region. This role operates remotely and contributes to understanding energy's role in development and vulnerability reduction across diverse socioeconomic contexts within the region.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to produce an analytical paper on energy systems in the Arab region, focusing on their role in sustainable energy transitions, economic development, and vulnerability reduction. The consultant will frame the concept of energy systems, review the current landscape of energy infrastructure, assess potential multipliers for investment and diversification, and examine how digital and physical infrastructure enhance resilience. The ultimate goal is to offer insights and recommendations for enabling investment and cooperation to achieve measurable results in domestic and regional energy systems, contributing to narrowing disparities in energy access and development opportunities across the Arab States.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide a framing for energy systems within the context of sustainable energy transitions. Key duties include reviewing the current landscape of energy systems in Arab States, including planned and under-construction infrastructure. The consultant will assess the potential multipliers from these projects for investment, economic diversification, and human capital development. Furthermore, the role involves examining how digital and physical infrastructure development has enhanced the resilience and reduced the vulnerability of energy systems in Arab States, drawing on ESCWA knowledge products. Finally, the consultant will offer insights and recommendations for enabling investment and cooperation to generate measurable results for domestic and regional energy systems.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional work experience in the energy field is required, with demonstrated experience in regional development issues related to the Arab region. Experience writing reports and papers for international organizations on energy is also required. Experience conducting quantitative analysis and interpretation is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic and French is desirable. Demonstrated experience in writing reports and papers for international organizations on energy. Demonstrated experience conducting quantitative analysis and interpretation.
