Organizational Context

This position is within the Human Rights Service of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), based in Kabul. The Assistant Gender Affairs Officer reports to the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader, contributing to the mission's mandate on human rights and gender equality within the assigned region.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Gender Affairs Officer supports the UNAMA Human Rights Service by researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information on women's and girls' human rights and gender equality in the mission area. This involves liaising with authorities and stakeholders, developing initiatives to address violations, and raising awareness. The role contributes to monitoring, reporting, and advocating for the promotion and protection of human rights, with a specific focus on gender perspectives, and integrating these considerations into UNAMA's activities and broader UN efforts.

Responsibilities

Research, collect, verify, analyze, and synthesize information on women's and girls' human rights and gender equality. Liaise with de facto authorities, civil society, and UN agencies to monitor developments and address human rights violations. Develop initiatives to strengthen responses to gender discrimination and violence against women. Attend meetings and raise awareness on human rights issues related to women and girls. Assist in fact-finding for human rights and international humanitarian law violations. Contribute to UNAMA's human rights mandate activities, including protection of civilians and vulnerable groups, with a gender perspective. Support detention monitoring with technical advice on gender equality. Collect, analyze, and visualize data for reports and decision-making. Draft reports, briefings, and communications. Formulate recommendations for promoting human rights and gender equality. Mainstream human rights and gender equality in UNAMA activities and collaborate with UN agencies. Support discussions on human rights standards with stakeholders. Organize and participate in field missions. Ensure timely entry of human rights violation cases into databases.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in policy development or program implementation related to gender equality, child rights, and women's rights is required. Experience in human rights monitoring, reporting, and capacity building is also necessary. Experience with international human rights standards is required. Database management, data analytics, and project management experience are desirable.
