Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to develop comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines for applying green and sustainable chemistry principles throughout the electric vehicle (EV) life cycle, from sourcing to end-of-life management. The guidelines will empower policymakers and industry stakeholders to integrate sustainable chemistry into EV value chains, thereby reducing environmental and health impacts. The role contributes to promoting resource efficiency, circularity, and a more sustainable, low-emission transportation system, aligning with UNEP's mission to advocate for the global environment and support environmentally sound decision-making.
Responsibilities
The consultant will conduct a comprehensive review of scientific literature, technical reports, and policy frameworks related to green and sustainable chemistry in the EV value chain. This includes analyzing current practices, innovations, and standards in EV battery chemistries, materials management, and manufacturing/recycling technologies. The role involves assessing environmental and chemical risks across the EV life cycle, identifying critical substances and pollution risks, and evaluating opportunities for applying green chemistry principles. Additionally, the consultant will map EV material flows, identify intervention points for sustainability, and gather best practices and case studies from various regions. The primary output will be the development of practical, evidence-based guidelines with clear recommendations for policymakers and industry, alongside training materials and content for an online regulatory toolkit.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive professional experience in sustainable chemistry, chemicals management, or environmental management is required. Demonstrated expertise in applying green chemistry principles to industrial processes or product life-cycle design, particularly within the EV or battery value chain, is essential. Experience with EV battery chemistries, manufacturing, recycling, and end-of-life management is necessary. Familiarity with life-cycle approaches, chemical risk assessment, and international chemicals/waste management frameworks is also required.
