Organizational Context
The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), is seeking interns in New York. This division focuses on various statistical areas, including economics, demographics, environment, development goals, and data innovation. Interns will support the division's core work in data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
Job Purpose
This internship offers an opportunity to contribute to the United Nations Statistics Division's work in New York. Interns will gain practical experience in data collection, validation, analysis, dissemination, and visualization across diverse statistical domains. The role supports the division's projects, including statistical databases, software development, report preparation, and communication efforts. Interns will assist in organizing meetings and preparing technical documents, contributing to the division's mandate of advancing global statistics and supporting sustainable development goals. The internship is unpaid, full-time, and can be conducted in person or remotely, with a duration of 2-6 months.
Responsibilities
Interns will contribute to various statistical projects within the UN Statistics Division, supporting data collection, validation, analysis, dissemination, and visualization. Key duties include creating research and written contributions for reports, developing software prototypes (e.g., using Python), and producing content for outreach and social media. Interns will assist in managing statistical databases and dashboards, providing training and technical support on data collection programs, and conducting methodological research for technical documentation. They will also help prepare documents for international meetings, assist in organizing seminars and expert groups, and support communication efforts through data storytelling and infographics.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software, particularly the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams). Experience or ability in data analysis, visualization, database management, survey design, or Python programming is desirable.
