Sustainable Fiscal Policy and Public Finance Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the global voice for the environment, promoting sustainable development. The Industry and Economy Division, specifically the Finance and Economics Branch, focuses on the intersection of economics, trade, finance, and the environment. The Economic and Fiscal Policy Unit (EFPU) within this branch advises countries on green fiscal policy reforms to support the inclusive green economy and Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This internship within UNEP's Economic and Fiscal Policy Unit (EFPU) in Geneva aims to support global efforts in green fiscal policy reform. The intern will contribute to projects focused on integrating net-zero and nature-positive strategies, and advancing sustainable fiscal policies and public finance. The role involves assisting with project design, implementation, monitoring, and reporting, as well as supporting policy research, advocacy, and communications related to sustainable budgeting and harmful subsidies. The intern will gain practical experience in environmental economics and policy within a UN system context, contributing to the shift towards an inclusive green economy and the achievement of SDGs.
Responsibilities
Support programmatic tasks for projects on net-zero and nature-positive integration, sustainable fiscal policy, and public finance, including design, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. Assist with policy research and advocacy concerning sustainable fiscal policy, public policy, harmful subsidies (agriculture, fossil fuels), and sustainable budgeting. Contribute to the communication efforts of UNEP EFPU and the Green Fiscal Policy Network. Provide support for the unit's programmatic, policy, and communication needs. Assist the team and unit with other requested activities to ensure smooth operations and project advancement.
Work Experience
While professional work experience is not required, previous experience with green economy issues is beneficial. A field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. The internship is for a maximum duration of six months.
