Organizational Context
This position is within the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. The role reports to the Chief of the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office, contributing to the office's communication and engagement strategies.
Job Purpose
The Public Information Officer is responsible for developing and producing high-impact multimedia content for OHCHR's social media platforms to inform and engage external audiences. This involves exercising journalistic and political judgment for timely editorial decisions, planning strategic outreach campaigns, and fostering collaborations with UN-wide social media efforts. The role aims to increase OHCHR's following and engagement, strengthen brand awareness, and promote effective social media usage internally and externally. It also involves monitoring, analyzing trends, advising management on responses to topical human rights issues, and contributing to broader communications campaigns.
Responsibilities
Develop and produce high-impact multimedia content for OHCHR's social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to inform and engage external audiences. Exercise journalistic and political judgment for timely editorial decisions on content publication. Plan and initiate strategic outreach activities through social media campaigns and collaboration with UN-wide social media presence. Identify and maintain relations with key internal and external stakeholders for content development and implementation. Increase OHCHR's social media following and engagement, strengthening brand awareness. Monitor and evaluate the impact of social media content, conduct social listening, and advise management on appropriate actions for topical human rights issues. Ensure a data and audience-led approach to content creation. Contribute to OHCHR communications campaigns and represent OHCHR in UN social media groups. Provide guidance and advice to colleagues and management on the strategic use of social media to achieve human rights objectives and strengthen the Office's leadership and advocacy role.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, journalism, or public relations is required. Experience managing various social media platforms is also required. Experience in human rights at the international level, disseminating news on social media, and analyzing social media results are desirable.
