Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer in Kampala, Uganda, plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator Office's (RCO) mission to advance development priorities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This position contributes to the implementation of strategic communications, aiming to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support among target audiences. The role involves developing compelling narratives, creating content for various platforms, and fostering relationships with media and stakeholders. By monitoring public narratives and media landscapes, the officer helps inform communication strategies and manage reputational risks. The position is key to enhancing the UN's visibility and impact at the country level, ensuring effective communication of UN initiatives and priorities to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of communication strategies. This includes monitoring traditional, social, and digital media to gather insights and identify reputational risks. The role involves drafting narratives and messaging for various platforms, creating compelling content, and producing communications products like press releases and reports. Responsibilities also extend to media mapping, fostering relationships with media outlets, and coordinating press conferences and events. The officer will contribute to developing and implementing communication campaigns and strategic partnerships to maximize impact. Additionally, the role involves creating content for radio and podcasts, assisting with reporting, staying updated on communication trends and technologies, and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. Data analysis for reporting and decision-making is also a key function.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in developing creative content, understanding digital media platforms, conducting research and data analysis, and tailoring messages for diverse audiences are desirable.
