Organizational Context

The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, focused on technical assistance and capacity building for trade and investment. ITC supports the Sustainable Development Goals by connecting micro, small, and medium enterprises to global value chains, fostering sustainable growth and employment. This internship is within the Strategies and Policy for Trade and Investment division.

Job Purpose

This internship offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the design of national, provincial, and sector trade strategies, and to research export governance systems and value-chain development. The intern will gain practical insight into export development issues and strategic responses, supporting the ITC's mission to use trade as an engine for sustainable growth. The role involves technical research and analytical work, assisting in the preparation of reports and strategy materials, and understanding the delivery of strategic approaches to trade and export development, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises in developing countries.

Responsibilities

Conduct desk-based research and analysis on export development, competitiveness, and market opportunities at various levels, providing recommendations for performance improvement. Research and analyze sectoral value chains, mapping key actors, identifying bottlenecks, and areas for upgrading. Support the review of value-chain governance systems, including institutional arrangements and stakeholder engagement mechanisms. Synthesize existing studies and assessments to identify evidence gaps and priorities for export strategy development. Assist in preparing presentations, consultation materials, and communication products like infographics and social media content. Undertake related research, analytical, and coordination activities as required to support trade and export strategy interventions.

Work Experience

Experience in conducting research assignments is required. Experience in analyzing and organizing research results into structured reports is essential. The ability to work independently with minimal guidance is necessary. Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office tools and research tools is expected.
