Organizational Context

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development globally. Within UN-Habitat, the Planning, Finance and Policy Branch supports governments with tools for inclusive urban growth. The Policy and Legislation Section (PLS) focuses on policy, legislation, and urban-rural linkages, serving as a global center of excellence.

Job Purpose

This internship within UN-Habitat's Policy and Legislation Section (PLS) in Nairobi focuses on strengthening urban-rural linkages through regeneration. The intern will support research and policy-oriented work, contributing to project development, knowledge products, and the organization of events. The role aims to assist in developing territorial approaches that reduce spatial inequality and poverty, fostering shared prosperity by enhancing the urban-rural continuum.

Responsibilities

The intern will conduct research on urban and rural development policies, regeneration initiatives, and territorial strategies, analyzing data and compiling case-based evidence. Responsibilities include reviewing and preparing background documents, literature summaries, and technical inputs for project development and policy papers. The intern will also assist in developing knowledge products, policy tools, and communication materials, and contribute to the organization and documentation of thematic workshops, webinars, and learning events.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience. However, experience in research, copy editing, and familiarity with urban regeneration or related urban themes is required. Experience in database management/data analytics is desirable.

Skills

Strong research, writing, and analytical skills; ability to synthesize complex information. Familiarity with urban regeneration, rural revitalization, urban-rural linkages, territorial development, or sustainable urbanization. Proficiency in English (spoken and written). Fluency in Chinese (Mandarin) is desirable.
