Organizational Context
The United Nations Secretariat, specifically the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), is seeking an intern. This role is based at UNHQ and will support the Programme Planning and Coordination Unit (PPCU) in its communications and outreach efforts, focusing on major intergovernmental processes and events.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in communications and outreach within the UN Secretariat's Division for Inclusive Social Development. The intern will support the Programme Planning and Coordination Unit in preparing for significant international events in 2027, including the Commission for Social Development, the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The role involves assisting with internal and external communications, content creation for digital platforms, and supporting outreach activities to ensure the successful execution of these key intergovernmental processes and related initiatives.
Responsibilities
The intern will research and monitor UN developments and news related to inclusive social development. Key duties include producing and updating digital content such as articles, event coverage, and video messages for DISD websites and social media. The role involves supporting preparations and communications for major events like CSocD65, COSP20, and UNPFII, including managing NGO participation, side events, and outreach. The intern will also attend meetings, draft and publish news stories, create public information materials (presentations, infographics, social media cards), and assist with communications campaigns for UN international days. Additionally, the intern will monitor social media engagement, evaluate communications impact, update website content, and perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a relevant field of study is necessary. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Successful candidates must secure appropriate visas and work authorization if not a citizen or permanent resident of the host country.
