Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) supports member states in designing, implementing, and evaluating development strategies through evidence-based economic analysis. This role is part of ESCWA's efforts to provide rigorous assessments of policy interventions, accounting for external shocks and structural factors.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of a national development plan. This involves collecting and analyzing macroeconomic, sectoral, and socioeconomic data, applying econometric and statistical techniques to develop counterfactual scenarios, and assessing progress towards development objectives. The role contributes to ESCWA's analytical work by providing evidence-based insights for policy recommendations and supporting member states in fostering sustainable growth and economic diversification.
Responsibilities
Review national development plan documents and related policy materials. Identify relevant indicators, targets, and evaluation questions. Collect, compile, clean, and harmonize macroeconomic, sectoral, and socioeconomic datasets from various sources. Develop databases and documentation for quantitative analysis. Contribute to designing the evaluation framework and analytical methodology. Apply econometric techniques, including time series and panel data analysis. Assess performance across key macroeconomic and sectoral indicators. Conduct robustness checks and sensitivity analysis. Prepare reports, technical notes, presentations, and policy recommendations. Support ESCWA's broader analytical work as needed.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 year of professional experience in macroeconomic analysis, applied economics, econometrics, development planning, economic modeling, or policy evaluation is required. Demonstrated experience with macroeconomic and socioeconomic data is necessary. Experience preparing analytical reports for governments or international organizations is required. Experience in the Arab region is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in Stata, R, Python, EViews, or similar analytical software. Strong knowledge of econometric methods, including time-series and panel-data analysis. Fluency in both Arabic and English is required.
