Assistant Data Specialist
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts and ensuring synergies. Based in the Regional Office for Arab States in Cairo, Egypt, this role supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework and global disaster risk reduction initiatives. The position reports to the Deputy Chief, under the overall authority of the Chief of the Regional Office.
Job Purpose
This role supports the installation, implementation, and operational use of DELTA-Resilience to enhance national disaster risk and resilience analytics. The incumbent will assist in Sendai Framework Monitor (SFM) reporting, including data compilation, quality checks, and validation, ensuring alignment with framework indicators. Responsibilities include improving the quality and interoperability of disaster loss and damage data, contributing to gender-disaggregated data, and supporting the integration of disaster data with other statistical frameworks. The role also involves capacity building for partners on data tools and contributing to analytical products that inform risk-informed decision-making and planning.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include supporting the installation and operational use of DELTA-Resilience for national disaster risk analytics. The role involves assisting with Sendai Framework Monitor (SFM) reporting, data compilation, quality checks, validation, and liaison with country coordinators. Improving the quality, consistency, and interoperability of disaster loss and damage data, including DesInventar, is crucial. The incumbent will also support data disaggregation by sex, age, income, and disability, and contribute to the Global Disaster-Related Statistics Frameworks (G-DRSF). Capacity building for partners through technical assistance and training on data tools, and developing training materials are also key duties. The role includes compiling, cleaning, and tabulating disaster-related data, maintaining the DELTA-Resilience portal, and verifying data accuracy and consistency for high-quality reporting.
Work Experience
No experience is required with an advanced university degree. Two years of experience in data analysis, data science, statistics, data monitoring, disaster risk reduction, or socio-economic development is required with a first-level university degree. Experience in disaster risk assessment and monitoring is essential. Experience with UN systems or international organizations, and with data management/analysis tools, is desirable.
