Organizational Context
The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) of the United Nations leads digital transformation through technology solutions. The Enterprise Solutions Service (OICT/ESS) develops and supports enterprise solutions. This role is within OICT/ESS, hosted by the UN Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre in Deqing, China.
Job Purpose
This GIS Developer role supports the UN's digital transformation by developing and implementing geospatial applications. The purpose is to contribute technical expertise to requirements analysis, design high-quality solutions, and ensure effective application support. The role involves programming, testing, debugging, and implementing new applications with Geospatial and/or AI components, adhering to UN standards. It also includes preparing documentation, training materials, and providing 3rd level application support for geospatial systems, ensuring their continued functionality and user satisfaction.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include designing and developing software applications using GIS technologies. This involves contributing technical expertise to requirements analysis and solution design, and providing detailed documentation of changes while managing version control using systems like Git. The role requires providing 3rd level application support and problem resolution for geospatial components. Additionally, the consultant will participate in the development, programming, testing, debugging, and implementation of new applications with Geospatial and/or AI components, adhering to UN standards. Preparing technical and user documentation, training materials, and conducting technical presentations are also essential. Support for deployed GIS systems, including version management, data recovery, and troubleshooting, along with managing and administering geospatial SQL databases, are critical duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Geospatial systems using ArcGIS is required. Additionally, 3+ years of experience with ETL for geospatial data, 3+ years of experience with SQL and geodatabases, and 2+ years of experience using Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript for GIS are necessary. Experience with Open Source GIS tools like QGIS is desirable.
