Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer supports the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Mauritius and Seychelles by contributing to the strategic positioning of the UN and the effective implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). This role is crucial for managing joint UN country team results and driving the UN's multi-year program of action to accelerate SDG achievement. The officer will build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including UN entities, government officials, civil society, media, and influencers, to coordinate communication activities, exchange best practices, and support the organization's development agenda. The position aims to enhance awareness, engagement, and support for UN initiatives through strategic communication efforts.

Responsibilities

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of communications strategies. This includes monitoring media, drafting narratives and messaging, and creating compelling content optimized for various platforms. The role involves media mapping, fostering relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, particularly for crisis situations. Responsibilities also include planning and coordinating press conferences and media events, and potentially acting as a spokesperson. The officer will produce communications products like press releases and reports, develop and implement communication campaigns, and coordinate strategic partnerships. Additionally, the role supports outreach and advocacy strategies, creates content for UN radio and podcasts, and assists in preparing reporting and training materials related to strategic communications. Monitoring and analyzing communication activities for effectiveness and reporting on data insights are also key duties.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communications strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communications principles, creative content development, and drafting clear messages for diverse audiences is essential. Experience with current and emerging digital media platforms and conducting data analysis is desirable. One year or more of experience in AI programs and data analytics is also desirable.
