Associate Communications Officer
Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), led by an empowered UN Resident Coordinator, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs. This role is within the UN Secretariat's Resident Coordinator System, recalibrated for the UN 2.0 shift, focusing on data, digital, innovation, and a mission-driven culture. The position is based in the UN RCO in Thimphu, Bhutan.
Job Purpose
The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Bhutan. This position contributes to the effective implementation of communications strategies aimed at raising awareness, driving engagement, and building support for UN development priorities and the SDGs. The role involves crafting compelling narratives and messages, managing media relations, developing and producing various communication products, and coordinating communication campaigns. By fostering strategic partnerships and ensuring a whole-of-UN approach to communications, the officer helps to advance UN priorities and enhance the UN's visibility and impact at the country level, contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include monitoring traditional, social, and digital media to inform communications strategy and identify reputational risks. The role involves implementing communications strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement, drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across various platforms, and developing media outreach. This includes planning and coordinating press events, acting as a spokesperson when required, and creating compelling content and communications products like press releases and infographics. The officer will also develop and implement communication campaigns, foster strategic partnerships, and support outreach and advocacy efforts. Additionally, responsibilities include creating content for UN radio and podcasts, contributing to communications policy and training, assisting with reporting, staying updated on communication trends and technologies, and ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in communications, international relations, or a related field is required. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communications strategies is essential. Experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable. Knowledge of strategic communications principles, drafting clear messages for diverse audiences, and developing creative content are also desirable.
Skills
Professionalism, communication, and planning/organizing skills are essential. Specific competencies include critical thinking, public speaking, knowledge of digital design, presentation skills, data analysis and interpretation, research abilities, and efficient time management. The ability to apply sustainable development concepts and maintain confidentiality is also important.
