Organizational Context

The United Nations Secretariat, specifically the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), is seeking a Legal Intern. This internship is based at UN-House ESCWA in Beirut for an expected duration of two months. The role supports work on legal and regulatory frameworks crucial for market development in the Arab region.

Job Purpose

The Legal Intern will provide essential research and documentation support for initiatives related to competition and consumer protection frameworks within the Arab region. This includes contributing to a market study on Oman’s building materials sector and assessing legal frameworks under Oman’s 10th National Development Plan. The intern will also assist in preparing for key events like the Arab Competition Forum and a regional consumer protection webinar. The role aims to enhance understanding and implementation of effective legal and regulatory practices to foster transparent and competitive markets, contributing to ESCWA's mandate.

Responsibilities

Conduct preliminary research on legal and regulatory topics, focusing on competition and consumer protection. Support legal research for Oman’s building materials sector study and the assessment of Oman’s 10th National Development Plan. Assist in drafting, editing, and proofreading legal documents, reports, and presentations. Provide research and documentation support for consumer protection initiatives, including webinars. Aid in the preparation for the Arab Competition Forum and related policy activities. Organize and maintain legal information and reference files. Offer support to legal resources and initiatives like the Arab Business Legislative Framework (ABLF) and Arab Legislations Portal (ALP). Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Work Experience

No prior working experience is required for this internship. However, a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also important.
