Organizational Context
The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) provides retirement, death, disability, and related benefits to over 90,000 beneficiaries and 130,000 participants across 25 member organizations. With offices in New York, Geneva, Nairobi, and Bangkok, UNJSPF-Pension Administration employs approximately 282 staff. This role is within the Client Services Section in New York, reporting to the Chief of Client Services.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Client Services Section of the UNJSPF by providing essential information and advisory services to participants, retirees, beneficiaries, and member organization administrative staff. The Benefits Assistant will advise clients on participation, entitlements, and benefits, ensuring accurate responses align with the Fund's Regulations and Rules and the Pension Adjustment System. Key functions include researching queries, initiating administrative procedures, advising relevant units on retiree status, monitoring benefit verifications, and processing administrative actions related to fund participation. The position also involves assisting with data analysis, report preparation, updating information materials, and potentially training junior staff, contributing to the efficient operation of the Client Services Section.
Responsibilities
Provide information and advice to participants, retirees, beneficiaries, and member organization staff regarding participation, entitlements, and benefits. Conduct research to ensure accurate responses to queries, adhering to UNJSPF Regulations, Rules, and the Pension Adjustment System. Initiate administrative procedures for matters such as proof of residence and changes in country of residence. Advise relevant units, including insurance sections and former civil servant associations, on retiree and beneficiary status. Monitor and control Certificate of Entitlement verifications, releases, suspensions, and benefits. Initiate computer runs for benefit activation and termination. Process and audit administrative actions for fund participation, including validation, restoration, and transfer of pension rights. Run and audit estimates for future benefit options and entitlements. Review and process applications for Emergency Fund assistance. Participate in standardizing communication procedures and training activities for the section. Assist with data collection, analysis, presentation, and report preparation. Update information materials like web pages and brochures. Train junior staff as needed.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in employee benefits administration or a related field is required. This requirement is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Two years of client services experience is desirable, as is one year of data analytics experience. Experience in a pension fund, specifically in client servicing or entitlement processing, is also desirable.
