Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development and adequate housing for all. Its Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This role supports UN-Habitat's partnership with the Municipal Government of Rio de Janeiro on the Periferia Viva Maré Project, focusing on urban infrastructure and community development in peripheral territories.
Job Purpose
This Programme Assistant role is crucial for supporting the implementation of the Periferia Viva Maré Project in Rio de Janeiro, a collaboration between UN-Habitat and the Municipal Government. The purpose is to provide essential administrative and logistical support to ensure the project's activities, including planning, execution, and follow-up, are carried out effectively. The role contributes to UN-Habitat's mandate of transforming cities into safer, more inclusive, and resilient places by facilitating project operations, stakeholder communication, and documentation. This support is vital for improving living conditions in peripheral urban areas and strengthening community initiatives, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda.
Responsibilities
The Programme Assistant will provide comprehensive administrative and logistical support for project activities, including planning, execution, and follow-up of meetings, missions, and events. This includes assisting in the preparation, organization, and consolidation of technical reports, presentations, and project documentation for both internal use and external partners. The role involves supporting coordination and communication efforts among various stakeholders and counterparts involved in the project. Additionally, the Programme Assistant will maintain updated records and filing systems for project activities, ensuring timely documentation of achievements. The position also requires performing other related duties as assigned to ensure the effective implementation and monitoring of the project, contributing to UN-Habitat's urban development initiatives.
Work Experience
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in relevant fields, specifically in research in favelas, community mobilization, and teamwork within Brazil, is required. Experience in the social sector and supporting fieldwork, particularly in public sector or vulnerable areas, is desirable. Previous experience working with the United Nations is also considered an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in Windows and Office packages, web search engines, and online event/conference tools. Competencies include professionalism, planning and organization, effective communication, and teamwork. Knowledge of UN-Habitat processes and procedures is beneficial.
