IMEO Methane Alert and Response System’s Implementation Coordinator

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads the global environmental agenda, with its International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) driving methane emission reductions. IMEO provides data to support Paris Agreement goals and manages the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). This role supports IMEO's work, focusing on strategy, government engagement, and partner coordination.

Job Purpose

This role serves to provide technical expertise and guidance for the implementation of the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). The purpose is to contribute to the scaling up of the MARS system and ensure coordinated activities between technical teams. The Implementation Coordinator will support IMEO's initiatives, including strategy development, technical engagement with governments, and partner coordination. The role is crucial for translating methane emissions data into actionable reduction strategies aligned with the Paris Agreement, ultimately contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include providing targeted guidance for MARS coordination, liaising between technical and engagement components to align workstreams and ensure timely delivery. This involves analyzing system data to identify growth and implementation barriers, tracking MARS initiatives against project timelines, and proactively addressing implementation challenges through stakeholder coordination. The role also entails providing regular updates on project outcomes, coordinating with external partners, and overseeing the phased roll-out of a technical support system for MARS focal points and operators. This includes developing system concepts, coordinating pilot phases, reporting on results, and refining the system based on feedback. Additionally, the role involves providing technical inputs for country deep-dive analyses, summarizing findings, and ensuring the quality and consistency of outputs.

Work Experience

Requires a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in environmental, climate, or methane policy. Experience in strategy development, government engagement, partner coordination, and implementing technical systems within an environmental context is desirable.
