International Consultant (Graphic Designer - Sint Maarten)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), headquartered in Vienna, leads efforts against illicit drugs, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism, while strengthening justice and rule of law. With a global network, UNODC has been active in the Caribbean for over 15 years, supporting crime prevention and criminal justice reform. This role supports UNODC's Detention Sector Reform Programme in Sint Maarten, focusing on modernizing the correctional system.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide essential graphic design, information design, and editorial layout services to support the production of operational and knowledge products for the Detention Sector Reform Programme (DSRP) in Sint Maarten. The consultant will be responsible for developing visual flashcards based on approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and professionally formatting technical reports and operational documents for both print and digital use. The role is crucial for establishing a consistent visual identity across all UNODC deliverables, ensuring they align with UN and UNODC branding requirements and are adapted to the local operational context. By transforming substantive content into clear, accessible, and publication-ready materials, the consultant will significantly contribute to the effectiveness of the DSRP's communication and training efforts, ultimately supporting Sint Maarten's long-term goal of building a modern correctional system aligned with international standards.
Responsibilities
Develop a comprehensive visual style guide and a reusable design system for flashcards and reports, defining grids, typography, color palettes, icons, and usage rules. Create editable master templates for flashcards and reports to ensure efficient production and future adaptability. Design approximately 400 visual flashcards across 20 SOP sets, translating complex procedures into clear, concise, and visually engaging cards with professional icons and diagrams suitable for a correctional setting. Professionally format up to nine UNODC reports and operational documents, approximately 300 pages in total, ensuring consistent application of design elements like covers, headings, tables, and figures. Prepare all deliverables for both print and digital use, providing editable source files and print-ready PDFs. Manage project timelines, coordinate with UNODC and national counterparts, and provide regular progress updates.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive professional experience in graphic design, visual communication, information design, or editorial design is required. Experience designing and formatting policy documents, technical publications, and institutional reports for public-sector entities is essential. Proven experience producing visually consistent, multi-document publication packages, supported by a strong portfolio, is necessary. Familiarity with editorial production, print/digital publishing, typography, and file preparation is also required.
