Associate Communications Officer
Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of the UN Secretariat's reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. This role is within the UN RCO in Niamey, Niger, reporting to the Head of the Office, and contributes to the UN 2.0 shift focused on data, digital, innovation, and strategic foresight.
Job Purpose
The Associate Communications Officer supports the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Niamey, Niger, by implementing communication strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for UN development priorities and SDGs. This involves developing compelling content, managing media relations, and coordinating communication campaigns across various platforms. The role contributes to shaping narratives, monitoring public perception, and fostering strategic partnerships to maximize the impact of UN initiatives. The officer also assists in crisis communication efforts and reporting, ensuring effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to advance the UN's mission and objectives.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement communication strategies to raise awareness and engagement. Draft compelling narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across multiple channels. Monitor traditional, social, and digital media for insights and reputational risks. Manage media relations, including outreach to traditional and new media outlets. Develop media lines, particularly for crisis situations. Plan and coordinate press conferences, briefings, and media events. Create and produce communications products like press releases, web stories, and infographics. Develop and execute communication campaigns with measurable impact. Foster strategic communication partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Support outreach and advocacy strategies to advance UN priorities. Create content for UN and community radio channels and podcasts. Assist in developing and updating communication policies and training. Prepare reports and inputs for strategic communications. Stay updated on communication trends and emerging technologies. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information securely.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in drafting messages for diverse audiences, developing creative content, and utilizing digital media platforms is desirable. Skills in research, data collection, and analysis are also desirable, as is experience in data analytics.
