Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of a global reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. The Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO) within the UN Secretariat oversees the Resident Coordinator system, recalibrating to support the 2030 Agenda and UN 2.0 initiatives. This role is situated within the UN RCO in Maputo, Mozambique.

Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Maputo, Mozambique. This position contributes to the effective communication of UN development priorities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the country. The role involves developing and implementing communication strategies, creating compelling content across various platforms, and fostering relationships with internal and external stakeholders. By monitoring media, drafting narratives, and supporting outreach activities, the officer helps to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for the UN's work, ultimately contributing to the achievement of national development priorities and the global 2030 Agenda.

Responsibilities

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to media monitoring and analysis to inform communication strategies, including identifying reputational risks. This includes implementing communication strategies to raise awareness and engagement, and drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across multiple channels. The role involves media mapping, building relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, particularly for crisis situations. Responsibilities also include planning and coordinating press conferences and events, creating compelling content and communications products (press releases, web stories, reports), and developing strategic communications partnerships. The officer will contribute to outreach and advocacy campaigns, create content for radio and podcasts, and assist in reporting on communications activities. Maintaining expertise in emerging communication trends and technologies, and ensuring the confidential handling of sensitive information are also key duties.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in data analytics, developing creative content, conducting research and data analysis, and familiarity with digital media platforms are desirable.
