Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), specifically the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO), is seeking an intern. This role is based at UNHQ in New York and supports the work of the new Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience within the UN Secretariat, supporting the Financing for Sustainable Development Office. The intern will contribute to the critical work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on International Tax Cooperation, assisting in research, analysis, and documentation related to tax matters and sustainable development. This role offers an opportunity to gain exposure to international policy-making and intergovernmental processes, contributing to the UN's mandate in global economic and social affairs. The internship is designed to be a valuable learning experience, enhancing the intern's understanding of international tax cooperation and its impact on development.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide essential support to the Financing for Sustainable Development Office, particularly in relation to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation. Key duties include assisting in the drafting, review, and preparation of various documents such as papers, presentations, studies, and reports. The intern will also attend, support, and summarize conferences and meetings, including virtual sessions. A significant part of the role involves research, compilation, and analysis of information on international tax matters, covering areas like multilateral treaties, digital economy taxation, dispute resolution, and ESG issues, with a focus on their impact on sustainable development. Additionally, the intern will prepare input for briefing notes and speeches for senior officials and monitor relevant intergovernmental meetings.

No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed studies in a field closely related to the internship's focus on economic affairs and international tax cooperation.
Skills
Research, compilation, and analysis of information; drafting and reviewing documents; summarizing meetings and conferences; computer literacy in standard software applications; fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
