Organizational Context

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok seeks an intern for its Transport Division/Transport Research and Policy Section. This is a full-time, unpaid internship for a maximum of six months, providing an opportunity to contribute to sustainable transport initiatives within the region.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to provide practical experience in economic affairs, specifically within the transport sector of the Asia-Pacific region. The intern will support research and policy development related to sustainable urban mobility, climate change impacts on transport, and resilient transport systems. The role contributes to ESCAP's mandate of promoting sustainable transport policies among member countries and cities by assisting in data analysis, report preparation, and communication of findings. This experience will enhance the intern's understanding of international development work and policy advocacy in a key economic sector.

Responsibilities

Conduct research on themes such as environmental and social dimensions of transport, climate change impacts, emissions reduction, sustainable urban mobility, electric mobility, and resilient transport systems. Support the preparation of case studies, background materials, and research outputs including policy briefs, blogs, and technical reports. Undertake literature reviews, identify research gaps, and propose research topics. Collect and analyze transport development data from primary and secondary sources, preparing reports with findings and conclusions. Develop presentations on work outcomes and lessons learned. Liaise with Transport Division staff to identify key issues and prepare infographics and communication materials for policy advocacy. Assist with day-to-day divisional tasks, projects, and meeting preparation as needed.

Work Experience

While not explicitly required, experience in quantitative data analysis, including understanding of transport modeling techniques and methodologies, is highly desirable. An interest in research activities and in compiling, analyzing, and disseminating data insights for policymaking is also beneficial.
