Associate Communications Officer

Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of the UN Secretariat's reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. This role is within the UN RCO in Banjul, reporting to the Head of the RCO and collaborating with the UN Communication Group and data management colleagues.

Job Purpose

This role supports the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Banjul by contributing to the implementation of communications strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for UN priorities and the SDGs. The incumbent will assist in gathering insights from media monitoring, drafting narratives, developing messaging, and creating compelling content across various platforms. Responsibilities include media relations, content production (press releases, web stories, infographics), campaign development, partnership coordination, and outreach. The role also involves monitoring and analyzing communication effectiveness, managing digital platforms, and ensuring website content is up-to-date and accurate, contributing to the overall communication goals of the RCO.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include: - Monitoring traditional, social, and digital media to inform communications strategy and identify reputational risks. - Implementing communications strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for UN initiatives. - Drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across multiple channels. - Developing and maintaining media relations, including outreach to traditional and new media outlets. - Creating compelling content optimized for various platforms and producing communications products like press releases, reports, and infographics. - Developing and implementing communications campaigns and strategic partnerships. - Coordinating outreach and advocacy strategies, including content for radio and podcasts. - Monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on communication activities and their effectiveness. - Managing digital platforms, including website content and social media analytics. - Assisting with reporting and preparing speeches and talking points for the Resident Coordinator.

Work Experience

Requires a minimum of two years of experience in developing and implementing communications strategies. Essential experience includes managing digital communication platforms (websites, social media) and content production, as well as media relations and knowledge of the local media landscape. Experience within the UN system or international organizations is desirable.
