Organizational Context

This position is within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), specifically in the Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) located in Pretoria, South Africa. The Driver role reports to the Regional Representative or their designated supervisor, operating within the UN Secretariat.

Job Purpose

The Driver's primary purpose is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel and the timely delivery of important items such as parcels, diplomatic pouches, and documents. This role involves regular movement between the UN office and various external institutions, including ministries and embassies. The Driver is also responsible for facilitating airport pickups, handling customs and immigration procedures for officials, and performing minor vehicle maintenance and repairs to ensure operational readiness. Additionally, the role may involve assisting with data collection and reporting, contributing to the overall support functions of the OHCHR regional office.

Responsibilities

The Driver is responsible for operating vehicles safely for authorized personnel transport. Key duties include making regular pickups and deliveries of parcels, diplomatic pouches, and documents between the UN office and other institutions like ministries and embassies. The role also involves making minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers, as well as handling customs procedures for goods. Facilitating airport arrivals for officials, including immigration and customs, is another critical function. The Driver must perform daily vehicle maintenance, check essential components (oil, water, battery, brakes, tires), conduct minor repairs, and keep the vehicle clean. Accurate logging of trips, mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance is required. The Driver must also follow procedures in case of accidents and demonstrate good judgment, including basic first aid readiness. Assisting with data collection, analysis, and report preparation is also part of the role.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of continuous, professional driving experience with a documented safe driving record is required. Experience operating various vehicle types, including vans, is necessary. Desirable experience includes driving senior officials or VIPs, defensive driving, knowledge of diplomatic protocol, first aid, and prior work with UN entities or diplomatic missions.
