Drug Control and Crime Prevention Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Eastern Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya, supports states in combating maritime crime. This internship is part of the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea (GARS) team within the Global Maritime Crime Programme, which has a programming presence in several East African countries.
Job Purpose
This six-month, full-time, unpaid internship within UNODC's Global Maritime Crime Programme in Nairobi aims to provide practical experience in supporting efforts against maritime crime. The intern will assist professional staff in various tasks, contributing to the programme's operational and administrative functions. This role offers exposure to international crime prevention initiatives and the opportunity to develop skills in research, event support, translation, and data management within a UN context.
Responsibilities
The intern will contribute to preparing background documents, presentations, summaries, and talking points. Responsibilities include assisting in the organization of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences. The role involves attending meetings and taking notes, as well as translating documents between Somali and English. Additionally, the intern will maintain and update regional Excel trackers for programme grants, expenditure, implementation timelines, and procurement processes, and perform other necessary tasks to support the team's objectives.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship's focus on drug control and crime prevention. A demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and its ideals is expected.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams); ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds; keen interest in UN work; commitment to UN Charter ideals; strong written and spoken English; knowledge of an additional UN official language (advantageous); knowledge of Somali language (desirable).
