Associate Communications Officer
Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of a global reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under the UN Development System. The Associate Communications Officer role is within the UN RCO in Kabul, Afghanistan, reporting to the Head of the RCO. This position supports the UN's mission in the country.
Job Purpose
The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN's mission in Afghanistan by contributing to the implementation of communications strategies. This involves gathering insights from media monitoring, drafting compelling narratives, and creating content across various platforms to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for UN priorities. The role also involves fostering relationships with media and stakeholders, supporting event coordination, and contributing to data analysis for informed decision-making. The position aims to enhance the UN's visibility and impact in achieving the 2030 Agenda and SDGs within the country, while maintaining high standards of integrity and confidentiality.
Responsibilities
The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of communication strategies. This includes monitoring traditional, social, and digital media for insights and reputational risks, and drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences. The role involves media mapping, fostering relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, especially for crisis situations. Responsibilities extend to planning and coordinating press conferences and events, creating compelling content, and producing communications products like press releases and reports. The officer will also contribute to developing strategic partnerships, supporting outreach and advocacy campaigns, and creating content for radio and podcasts. Maintaining expertise in communication trends and technologies, handling sensitive information confidentially, and analyzing communication effectiveness are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in drafting messages for diverse audiences, creating content, and understanding digital media platforms is desirable. Skills in research, data collection, and analysis, along with experience in data analytics, are also beneficial.
